POST & COURIER: Building Rigging Business Takes Balance
With its racks of spud wrenches, hoists and shackles, its reels of heavy steel cable and its shelves and bins of slings and bolts, Charleston’s Rigging and Marine Hardware Inc. might seem like no place for a lady.
Nevertheless, company President Valerie Sawin has been right at home here since she and her husband Rick, vice president and general manager, started the company 15 years ago.
Like many people who start a business, the Sawins spent more time at work than at home in the early years, and they still try to maintain a family feeling among their growing number of employees. As a couple working together, they’ve faced special challenges keeping a balance between work and personal life.
